Canadian gig workers must wait for reform after Trudeau hangs on to power

The status of gig workers is likely to remain a mainstream political hot potato despite the defeat of the Conservatives in Canada’s federal election this week, which returned prime minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party to power, though without the majority he was seeking.

Before the election Erin O’Toole, leader of the opposition the Conservative Party, had pledged support to Canada’s 1.7m gig workers, who he claimed were excluded from federal programmes launched during the Covid-19 pandemic.
